Medical University of South Carolina
Dr. Moussa is a tenured Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), where he serves as the Director of the HLA Laboratory and is a member of the Functional Genomics Program at the Hollings Cancer Center. Dr. Moussa brings over 30 years of experience in clinical transplant immunology, infectious diseases, research, and teaching.
His initial training in immunology and infectious diseases took place at the Urology & Nephrology Center at Mansoura University, Egypt. There, he established the first molecular diagnostic unit for infectious diseases and molecular HLA typing in collaboration with the Hospital of Saint Louis, France. As part of the Microbiology and Immunology Clinical Laboratory Service, He helped initiate the first Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory for infectious diseases, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, cytomegalovirus, and hepatitis C virus. Between 1994 and 1997, Dr. Moussa attended several meetings and training courses in Belgium, Sweden, and Switzerland. During this time, he developed the first PCR-based assay for detecting mycobacteria in urine using PCR and non-radioactive DNA hybridization. He received his PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Mansoura University in 1998.
Before rejoining MUSC in late 2018, he was the Director of the HLA and Tissue Typing Laboratory at the University of Michigan Health System. His active research program currently investigates new approaches to extending heart transplant graft survival.
At MUSC, the HLA Laboratory supports solid organ transplant centers and the stem cell transplant programs at the MUSC Hollings Cancer Center.
