Copenhagen University Hospital
Annette Plesner has always been intrigued by the immune system and in particular the imbalances that trigger autimmune diseases and what ensures successful engraftment of transplanted cells and organs. She
is currently Senior Clinical Scientist at the Copenhagen University Hospital Department of Clinical Immunology and serves as EFI Technical Supervisor. In this role her primary focus includes key molecular and antibody analyses, optimizing and automating diagnostic protocols, implementing change controls to validatate novel techniques, and ensuring smooth inspections to maintain accreditations. Currently, she is working on implementing donor-derived cfDNA screening as a non-invasive biomarker to monitor graft health in whole organ transplanted patients.
She earned her PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Copenhagen based on HLA-matched type 1 diabetes patient research performed at the University of Washington in Seattle. To hone her diabetes and islet biology skills she moved on to post-doc at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, and prior to joining her current position in 2021 she was headhunted to Novo Nordisk A/S in Denmark to establish islet transplantation and assess the efficacy of novel diabetes therapeutics.
