Dr. Pinelli graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with degrees in Clinical Laboratory Science and Spanish. He worked as an ASCP-certified Medical Technologist at Emory University Hospital and Duke University Medical Center before completing a PhD at Emory University in the laboratory of Dr. Mandy Ford. He then joined Northwestern in 2016 as an HLA Laboratory Director in Training under the leadership of Dr. Anat Tambur. He completed his training in the fall of 2020 is now the Co-Director of the Transplant Immunology lab.
His research focuses on collaborations with transplant clinicians to utilize HLA antibody information to inform clinical practice and improve patient outcomes, with a particular interest in strategies to increase access to transplantation for highly sensitized patients such as desensitization and kidney paired exchange. Dr. Pinelli is also the director of the CAP-accredited Clinical Research Laboratory and Biorepository at Northwestern, which provides biospecimen processing and storage services for research studies at the Comprehensive Transplant Center.
