After graduating with a medical degree at Edinburgh University and training in Internal Medicine, Dr. Campbell moved to Edmonton in 1991 to train in Nephrology and Transplant Immunology. Under the supervision of Dr. Halloran, her research focused on HLA and antibody mediated rejection in renal transplantation. In 1995, she joined the department as a transplant nephrologist and following ongoing research in HLA antibodies and the role in rejection commenced further training in Histocompatibility and became the laboratory director in 2002.
As chair of the National HLA Advisory Committee for Canadian Blood Services from inception to 2020, Dr. Campbell the privilege to work with all the Canadian laboratory directors to establish minimum standards for testing and align reporting of antibodies for the Kidney Paired Donation and the highly sensitized registries. Other roles included Education Lead at the Alberta Transplant Institute (2014-2019), Chair of the HLA working group for the Canadian Society of Transplantation (2004-2019), Chair of the American Society of Transplantation Transplant Diagnostics Community of Practice (2012-2014), ASHI board member 2014-2016, and ASHI President 2018-2019. Dr. Campbell retired in 2023 and has been enjoying travelling to the UK to visit family and to go hiking and skiing in the Canadian Rockies. She recently completed a Wilderness Advance first aid course with the goal of volunteering.
